What is difference between Sewing machine and Overlocker/serger needles.?

Im always getting them confused in my sewing box. Is there a difference? They certainly look the same!

If your Sewing Machine was made in the last 45 years, then it uses needles of the system variously called 130/705H, HAx1, 15x1H, SY2020 and a couple of other things, depending on who made the needles. They’re all the same thing, just different manufacturers use different designators (and if you think that’s bad, try thread sizing… it’s plain bananas).

Sergers use a variety of needle systems; common ones include SY2054, DBx1, ELx1, DLx1F, DCx27 and a number of others. Some sergers use the same sewing machine needles as above — so you need to know what needle system your serger requires, and then sort out the needles by needle system.

When I had a serger that used a different needle from the standard household needle, I used to use a red magic marker to write a big S on all serger needle packets.
